Shulk POV
“Come out, you coward!”
I grip my Monado sword with both hands. I look around, then face forward— and then a beam of light enters my view.
The light shines outwards, and I squint my eyes against it. When it clears, there is a figure spreading a pair of crystal-white, feathery wings. He is wearing a short white tunic, which is held up, as in pinned, at his right shoulder.
He looks at me with two gentle yet fierce pools of blue eyes. He breathes deep, lowers himself in a fighting stance.
I grin at him, readjust my grip on my sword, and charge.
I jump up high, then swing my sword over my head and onto him. He disassembles his bow into two short swords and blocks me. He counters with a kick right to my face, angling high, using his wings to propel himself higher.
I stumble right, wipe my mouth. And then he’s on me again.
He jabs at me with his weapon, and every blow I dodge. A few of his attacks nick me, but they’re nothing.
I shoot my now hard breathing opponent with a smug look, and that’s enough to piss him off. He roars in frustration, and using his wings to add a burst of speed, lunges towards me.
His mistake. I aim a kick at his face, and he screams as he’s shot backwards. He lands on his back, and I say, “Left yourself open.”
“You know, in the middle of a battle, you don’t need to— argh!” Pit’s not able to finish his sentence as I send my Monado barreling towards him. He scoots backwards, barely missing it. He handsprings, once, setting himself up into another battle position.
“And you don’t need to be beaten. Come on. Focus.” I run towards him again, picking up my Monado on the way. He holds up his swords in defense, but I knock them out of his hands with my weapon. I deliver a low kick, sending him to the ground again.
I flick my wrist, a long blue laser now coming out of my Monado. I point it at his face, and say, “I win.”
Pit sighs. “Alright, Shulk, don’t need to rub it in.”
I chuckle, then hold out my hand. “Come on, let’s get you cleaned up.”
“Hmph.” He takes it, despite the sour look on his face. “You know, you also didn’t need to call me a coward at the beginning of our fight either—”
“Okay, I get it. A few notes.” I nudge him, grinning, but then purse my lips when I see him looking uncharacteristically upset.
“C’mon.” I sling an arm around him, and practically drag him towards a place on the battlefield where there’s a small, blue diamond, that’s actually a portal to get us back to the Smash Castle. “Let’s get ourselves a drink, huh?”
“Not your guys’ drink.” Pit manages a small smile. “You know how people are here.”
“Yeah, well, it’s your fault for being underage, Pitty Pat!” I tousle his hair, and he fights his way out of my grip. He glares at me, but not for more than two seconds before we both burst out laughing.
We both step onto the portal, and a second later we’re in the halls of our home.
It’s as busy as usual. People setting up for battles, creatures of all sorts setting up events to “boost our morale”, as they like to call it. After all, we were all just a bunch of people who were invited to this castle one day, and they wanted to consider us family. And to be honest, I wasn’t too upset about their efforts including that.
I nearly run into Samus, fully decked out in her armor, carrying a large, flowery cake. Right, it’s the eighth month anniversary for the sending out of invitations for our fighters. Felt like we celebrated the seventh month’s yesterday. Isabelle, the mayor of “The Town” (no one actually knows what it's called), is yelling orders and looking pissed about something. Pro tip: don’t ever get in her way.
I open my mouth to say something to Pit, but then bump into something huge and hulking. I grunt, getting ready to overdo my apologies when the man I ran into turns around. I immediately bite down on my “sorrys”.
“Shulk and Pit. What brings you here?” Simon Belmont smiles, more of a sneer than a genuine grin. Richter, his grandson or something like that, crosses his arm and stares down at the two of us.
“Simon. Richter.” I nod at them, then sigh. “Not very nice to see you, thanks. And news flash, I live here.” When Simon frowns I say, “What, you here to slay some more “monsters”, you crazy vampire hunters?”
“How dare you!” Simon pushes his jaw forward. “I will have you know that—”
“Yeah, whatever, your fancy speech. Come on, don’t even deny you’re crazy. You tried to kill the Corrins because both of them are dragons and have fangs.”
“They fall into the category of monsters.”
“Okay, Shulk, we should probably—” Pit is trying to lead me away from the Belmonts, but not before Simon trains his beady blue eyes on him and Pit quits what he is trying to do with me.
“First, you ruin our missions, and then you have the audacity to insult us.” Simon scowls. “You have some nerve, don't you, boy?”
“Excuse me, you're complaining that we saved your butts and everyone else’s? Talk about petty.” I glare at him, look him up and down. “Wanna challenge me, Grandpa?”
Simon saunters up to me, and when he is in front of me, he looks down into my face. “Maybe I will— actuallllly, I have a better idea.” Simon punches Richter in the arm. “He’ll fight you.”
“What—” Pit says, but I say “Deal.” I pause. “You know what, Pit will fight him.”
“What?!” I can feel the astonished look that PIt shoots at me as I keep my gaze trained on Simon’s face.
Simon raises an eyebrow. “What, you scared? Have to hide behind your little angel friend?”
“No.” I step even closer to him. “It’ll just be so easy, it won’t be any fun.”
Simon looks over my shoulder at Pit. “Well.”
“Yeah, sure.” Pit abruptly walks past the three of us, without looking back. And Richter happens to look very, very concerned.
